These are video treatments that I have written to songs (mostly the Moody Blues or Justin Hayward).

You might be wondering, what is a video treatment? It’s the story of the video. Since a script isn’t interesting to read except by industry personnel, the treatment makes it an easy way to convey the idea of what would be shot in the video if were to ever make it that far.!

A videos I would like to write a treatment for is Cyrus in the Moonlight by Empty Hats.

I have a few videos that I have put images to music, so I’ll add them when I transfer them: Highway and

Broken Dream

The music begins and we see a transparent young woman approach Justin. He is sitting alone in his bedroom playing his acoustic guitar. The young woman appears next to him, not quite there, but she’s watching Justin play and is smiling at him. In the memories, the figures are in black and white.

Justin starts singing the song. One more illusion shattered, one more broken dream. In a transparent overlay, we see an older woman and Justin talking. The woman is upset and obviously doesn’t want to be with him. She starts to leave, Justin tries to call her back, but she just shakes her head and walks away. Now we see Justin sitting by a window singing. Oh that the morning brings the sun. A younger Justin and the young girl can be seen through the window. Gone are the days when I could bounce right back again. Justin is walking through a park alone, in a half dissolve, we see the young girl and Justin walking together, laughing. See how the tears flow down like sweet summer rain. A tear falls on Justin’s cheek. The two images fade. Where does it leave me now? I find myself so free again. Justin continues through the park, alone. The picture changes to all black and white as we see young Justin and the girl together, enjoying a beach, and laying in the sun on a green lawn.

Even the smallest traces of your sweet perfume We see Justin lounging in his bedroom in a chair across from his bed. The room is mostly dark. He sniffs the air and looks around. Open the floodgates and I’m helpless. Justin’s eyes close as the picture fades to black and white and the girl is leaning over the young Justin, trying to get something. The young man caresses her hair. Now as the moonlight shadows cast across my room It’s night, the blue light of the moon spills across the floor. Justin stands and lies down on the bed. Only the whispered words are heard in the night The young girl appears standing next to the bed. Justin reaches out his arm to her and she folds herself into his embrace. Only a silent prayer ‘I love you still, I always will’. She mouths the words in his ear as he sings them.

The picture is in faded color, indicating a dream. We see Justin getting ready to leave with the band. He hesitates, watching the boys through an open door. The young girl is leaning against a door jam behind him. He sets his guitar case down and closes the door. He turns and she rushes into his arms.

Out of the dark I stumbled He staggers through a door into the faded color of his dream. Into the light. The girl is sitting by a fountain. She’s brightly lit – sitting in full sunlight. Only my fear has tumbled Justin sighs visually. I think I always knew that I would run to you. He runs over to the young woman by the fountain. She stands and they embrace.

Somewhere there’s children playing, somewhere far away. Justin turns to see four children playing on hill (two boys and two girls – various ages from six to twelve). The children jump up when they notice Justin. Running with open arms to greet me. The children come rushing down the hill, hurrying to Justin. They embrace him, showing much affection. Justin smiles at all of them. Over the hill the sunset dies and fades away. We see the sun set and the children disappear. The young woman touches Justin’s arm. I turn and I close the door with one last good-bye. He returns to the door, opening it and stepping through. He turns back to the woman, smiles sadly and sings. I will return no more, I’ll take my heart and let it fly. The young woman becomes a white dove that flies into the sunset and the picture returns to normal. Justin closes the door behind him.

The picture is in black and white. We see Justin’s red Gibson 335 electric guitar standing by a door. The young woman picks it up and gently puts it into a case. She picks up the case and sets it by the door. Justin walks into the room and notices the case. It appears as if he wants to stay, but she gently pushes him out the door, saying good-bye. The band is waiting outside and he gets into a van. She smiles very prettily at him as he drives off and then she cries. The picture pans up and we see Justin (in color) watching from a window above as the picture fades out.

Deep

As the music begins, you see a woman wearing rolled up jeans walking along a beach in the rain. She has an umbrella and is wading in the surf. You see a beach house behind her on the dune. Justin Hayward is standing on the deck watching her.

The scene changes to the woman wearing shorts gathering shells. It’s raining harder than before, and she has her umbrella again. Justin is just inside his door watching her.

The scene changes again, and you see the woman on the beach, this time in a white cotton dress. She’s walking past the beach house. She has her umbrella, but it isn’t up because it’s only drizzling.

The lyrics begin with Every time I hear the sound of the rain. Justin is sitting at a desk, writing. He looks up to a window, and sees the rain drizzling down the pane. He stands up, goes to the deck door, and sees her walk past. As she walks past, she looks up and makes eye contact with him. The lyrics continue, Beating on my roof again. He opens the door and stands on the deck watching her. I want to taste your love, he hesitates at the top of the stairs that lead from the deck to the beach. When And I want to go deep, deep. I want to go deep, deep. I want to go deep. plays, Justin walks down the stairs and slowly follows the woman down the beach, who is now a considerable distance ahead of him. She pauses and glances back at him, then continues walking.

The second verse begins with Every time I lift my eyes to the sky. Justin looks up at the sky and sees the clouds beginning to break as the sun prepares to set, then back down at her. She throws a glance at him over her shoulder. Something in my heart ask why. Justin looks up at the sky again. He mouths “Why?” with the lyrics, and gets a thoughtful expression on his face. Then he smiles and looks back down at her. I want to know the truth. Picture of the water crashing on the beach. And I want to go deep, deep. I want to go deep, deep. I want to go deep. Justin resumes his slow walk down the beach after the woman.

Like the footprints disappearing from the sand, The footprints she’s left behind are washed away by the waves crashing on the beach. I try to catch the thought, it slips right through my hand. She stops and turns to look at Justin. She studies him for a moment and smiles. And as the darkness throws its cloak upon the ground, the clouds break fully as the sun begins its decent down past the watery horizon. I start to run to you, I’ve got to take you down. Justin breaks into a run. The woman’s smile grows larger as she watches him. As the lyrics say And I want to go deep, deep. I want to go deep, deep. I want to go deep. He continues to run, it seems like it’s taking him forever to close the space between them. As the lyrics of the chorus end, he slows and stops in front of her and takes her into his arms. He pulls her down to the wet sand with him and before they kiss, fade to the water crashing on the beach with the sun setting.

When the words I’m going deep are said under the music, the screen fades to the beach house in the early morning and closes in. The third verse begins with Every time I feel I’m losing my way, you see her inside, preparing to leave. The power of your love remains. We see only a hand reach up and take hers. She turns to Justin and smiles. I want to touch your love. His hand caresses her hair and they gaze into each other’s eyes. And I want to go deep, deep. I want to go deep, deep. I want to go deep. He pulls her to him and she caresses his cheek. Yeah. They move closer to kiss, fade out to the ocean.

Lead guitar solo starts and you will see her walking alone on a footpath to the dunes. She looks up and sees someone sitting on the dune looking into the sunset in silhouette. She walks further up then stops and smiles, recognizing Justin. She walks the rest of the way up the dunes on tiptoe, so she can sneak up on him. She puts her arms around him and covers his eyes, grinning. He’s startled and grabs her arms to turn to see who it is. As their eyes meet, he grins and hugs her. She laughs at him. They watch the sun set together for a few moments, and then she stands and walks down the dunes to the beach. He follows and catches up to her, pulling her to him. They embrace, and before fade out, he looks at the camera and winks.

Hope and Pray

As the music begins, you see Justin sitting alone in a window seat reading a book. It’s evening, and he’s in his house on the second floor. The screen flashes images of past videos Your Wildest Dreams and I Know You’re Out There Somewhere. For example, the scene where Justin is being dragged away and the woman watches him go at the end of Your Wildest Dreams. Fade to Justin turning and seeing the woman from the end of I Know You’re Out There Somewhere.

When the lyrics begin with I see the headlights shining on the wall, headlights flash on his book and across the wall and he looks outside. A car pulls up. It seems I’ve got a visitor who is kind enough to call. The headlights go out and we can’t quite make out the figure getting out of the car. The person walks to the front door. Justin hurries to his door, imagining the woman from his past visiting. As And I hope and pray, everyday. I hope and pray we see him open the door and it’s her. Cut back the house with it’s you and we see Justin opening the door with John standing before him. Justin looks disappointed.

Fade to Justin playing snooker (or pool) by himself. The second verse begins with I thought I heard some footsteps on the floor. He tilts his head, as if listening, and we see someone walking down the hall. And tell me, am I dreaming or is someone at the door? He imagines a woman coming down the hall and standing at the door. He envisions her opening the door and coming to him. With And I hope and pray, everyday. I hope and pray they embrace and hold each other, both smiling. But when it’s you plays, it’s just Justin at the snooker table alone and Graeme walks in with two drinks.

Autumn turns to winter and winter turns to spring, I only know the passing of the days. The scene changes to Justin staring out his window. With And if you were to ask me ‘bout the meaning in my life, he remembers when they were young and in love. They had a romantic dinner together and strolled in a park. Then we see a memory of young Justin leaving her to go with the band. Then It kind of lost its meaning on the day you went away he recalls walking into an apartment with his luggage and finding a note she left telling him she couldn’t wait any more.

Fade into the next verse: You know that when it comes to matters of the heart. Justin watches the other Moodies with women at a party. Justin pulls out an old photo of him with his lost love. I thought I had it covered by it’s tearing me apart. Justin rips the picture in half and storms out of the room, the Moodies watch him go, startled. And I hope and pray, every day. I hope and pray it’s you. He imagines her coming up behind him to soothe his nerves, hold him, turning him around and gazing into his eyes. But the fantasy ends and Ray taps Justin on the shoulder.

Fade to the guitar solo, the Moodies take Justin to a party. It’s obvious Justin doesn’t want to be there and isn’t enjoying himself. John tries to get him to snap out of it and have fun, but Justin becomes angered. Flash to the scene from I Know You’re Out There Somewhere video (Justin still playing the guitar in the background) of John and Justin fighting about the girl and the girl running off, with Justin pushing John away and following. Back to the present and Justin stops fighting with John and walks calmly away.

Again Autumn turns to winter and winter turns to spring and this time a fade between seasons. With The summer sun still lingers in my head Justin remembers summer days spent with her. If it wasn’t for the letters that you wrote me from the heart, as he sorts through a desk drawer, he comes across old love letters she had sent to him. I’d sometimes wonder, baby, if I dreamed it all instead. He picks up the letters and holds them close to his heart, looking heartbroken.

You see, I’ve got to feel your hand upon my face. He looks in a photo album at faded pictures of the two of them together with her caressing his cheek. He closes his eyes. A ghostly image of her caresses his cheek and fades away. I need to get the calling to rejoin the human race. John walks up to him and asks him to go somewhere, by Justin shakes his head, puts the book down and looks out a window. John looks distressed, but doesn’t press and leaves.

Outside, on a bright, sunny day, Justin walks and sits on a park bench near a woman. And I hope and pray, everyday. I hope and pray it’s you. He looks at the woman wondering who she is, but not dwelling on her. He looks away. I hope and pray, everyday. I hope and pray it’s you. Yeah, yeah We see the Moodies walking into the park. I hope and pray, everyday. She looks at him and it’s her. She wants to go to him, knowing who he is, but holds back. I hope and pray it’s you. She stands and walks passed him. He watches her walk by, the picture loses focus, refocusing for an instant on the long lost girl, then refocusing on the woman walking away. Justin stands and walks away from her. She turns around and sees him leaving. She almost calls out to him, but stops herself. She turns as Justin turns to look back. He catches a glimpse of her profile (which is close up and in slow motion), shrugs and sees the Moodies walking not too far away. He smiles at them and calls out. He walks toward them, signifying they are his life now and the scene fades out with the music.

I Heard It

The song opens with the sound of the wind and we see a car driving down a lonely stretch of road at sunset. We’re looking down on the car from above and we speed up to catch the car. As we do, the song begins.

We see Justin at the wheel sitting back, relaxing and enjoying the drive. As the verse begins, he starts singing. I was driving down a lonely highway as the sun went down. I heard a voice right beside me saying, He looks around and is startled to see himself sitting in the seat next to him singing Why don’t you turn around. Why don’t you stop - feel the wonder. Justin pulls the car to the side of the road and gets out. In the car, he continues. Listen to the sound. The Justin outside sing Well, I heard it - I heard it. I heard it. I heard it. The breeze ruffles his hair and he seems totally at ease as he looks around.

We see a close up of a clock face at midnight. Then we see Justin looking up at it as he leans against a wall. He sings. Have you listened to the bell at midnight on the still night air? A few people pass Justin and smile, but walk on. It sets you dreaming of the strangest journey across the great somewhere. He looks up at the moon and stars overhead. Then you start the great adventure, dreams without a care. We see two transparent men sword fighting in the square, one looks like Justin. Well, I heard it. I heard it. I heard it. I heard it. Justin sings and smiles at the vision of a maiden being rescued by a knight, of a starship landing in the square.

Like leaved borne on the wind. We see Justin walking and a lead blows past him. He gets a reflective look on his face as he sings. Our words will fade and die. Only to return as new life by and by. Then a father with his young child upon his back walks past. The passion that we feel, like loves wild and free. Justin sees a young couple frolicking on the beach together. Are footsteps on the sand holding back the mighty sea. Justin looks out at the waves crashing on the beach and the footprints the couple left behind and sees them wash away.

The third verse begins and we see Justin walking into a walled garden. There’s a place, secret garden. Children are playing on a swing in the garden. And when the day is done. Justin lies down in the grass. We lie among the grass and flowers underneath the sun. He’s singing and then looks up to the sky. As we look up the sky is turning and with the earth we’re one. We see a picture of the clouds slowly rolling by. Then we see a child who attempted to jump over Justin land on him. Well I heard it. Justin laughs and lifts the child, singing. I heard it. The others come over. I heard it. I heard it.

There’s a musical segue here in which we see Justin walking through each of the scenes above for a few seconds, the hill and sunset, the town at midnight, the garden with the children, then the ocean.

The passion that we feel like lovers wild and free. We see the two young lovers together lying together on a towel on the beach as Justin walks by. Are footsteps on the sand holding back the mighty sea. This time the footprints Justin sees behind him are his own then he glances out at the ocean.

The forth verse, Justin is in the country again. There’s a voice - that calls us onward down the lonely street. He’s a little ways away from his car, on a quiet country lane. He’s walking toward a graveyard. And when we tread the path no longer, the circle is complete. A young woman is holding a baby in her arms, standing over a grave. It appears that we have just missed a service. A million souls scream in anguish while others rest in sleep. We can see the young woman’s tears on her face and the baby sleeping peacefully in her arms and the flowers placed lovingly on the ground over the grave. Well, I heard it. I heard it. I heard it. I heard it. Justin looks sad as he makes eye contact with the woman who nods at him.

I heard it. Justin’s in the town on the steps. I heard it. Justin is will the children in the garden. I heard it. He’s by the ocean. I heard it. He’s by his car and the sun has just set. He slowly looks around, smiles and gets into his car, turns the car around and drives away as the music fades out.

Is This Heaven?

The song begins and we see a guitar being played but we can’t see the player. Next we see Justin snapping his fingers, lying on his side. He sings, looking directly into the camera.  Walking home with you last night, The scene cuts to a black and white image of Justin walking home with a lady. We hear You said the world is beautiful, We see Justin on the floor again. And how things look that way when you’re in love. The view widens and we see John sitting at Justin’s feet. He’s also snapping and he starts to sing with Justin. I love this world. When I’m in your arms, Quick cut to Justin and the lady from the night before in a lose embrace. Is this Heaven? Justin sits up and he and John snap and clap with the music.

Justin sings. I opened up a letter that the postman gave to me this morning, had to stop myself from shouting out, I love this world. Justin pulls the letter out of a pocket and smiles at it. When I’m in your arms, is this Heaven? When I’m in your arms, is this Heaven?

Justin is sitting in a park looking at the sky, singing. I know that Heaven waits for those whose love is true. He stands and looks at the camera. I want to be there when the age of love is come again.

Justin is in a bar talking to a woman. Tell me all about yourself and how you came to me like in a dream. And every night I dream of you. John walks over and starts singing to her as well. I dream of you. Both men sing to her. When I’m in your arms, is this Heaven? When I’m in your arms, is this Heaven?

John takes the woman into his arms and they dance. Justin shrugs and leans against the bar. Another woman walks up to Justin and asks him to dance. He shakes his head, but she pulls him out onto the floor anyway. John shows off with his lady but Justin ignores him and sings. When I’m in your arms, is this Heaven? When I’m in your arms, is this Heaven?

The woman John was dancing with slips out of his grasp and tap dances out on the floor. The others stop to watch. Ray is whistling for the remainder of the song. Justin sings to those in the room. I know that Heaven waits for those whose love is true. He turns to the girl he was dancing with, Don’t ask me where or when the time for us will come again. Justin leaves her and she’s bewildered.

All four men are sitting on a hill watching the sun go down. All are singing. I sit and watch the sun go down and in the darkness there’s no sound. While in the sky tonight the stars all cry. They look at the camera and sing. I love you. Are they crying out over you? Cos you’re in my heart, is this Heaven. cos the story starts and ends with you.

Back to the tap dancer, she finishes her number and John hugs her. Ray finishes whistling and says “yeah”. Fade out.

Never Blame the Rainbows for the Rain

Before the music begins, you will see a young woman, Alexis, who has been crying. She’s asleep in a chair, propped up against a wall, looking very uncomfortable. The room is filled with paintings of imaginary places, and dreamscapes. We see that she is miserable because the man who she thought she loved has treated her badly and had an affair.

As the music begins, the paintings start to move. In one, we see Justin punting along a river. It starts as a frozen picture, and then comes alive. Justin docks the little boat, climbs out of the picture, walks up to Alexis and wakes her. She’s startled and notices the pictures in her room are moving. Justin takes her hand and gently pulls her to his boat. She sits and he uses the pole to push the boat out into the water.

Justin starts singing Sailing along the river of time, Alexis is looking in awe around her at the scenery she had seen from the picture. Adrift on dreams, through midnight chimes, we see Alexis put her hand over the side of the boat and lift up a cloud, which signifies a dream. Justin smiles. He punts the boat to a crystal waterfall while he sings positively frozen crystal waterfalls and Alexis reaches out and grazes her hand on the crystal.

With The mountain of hope is there to be climbed the boat is at the foot of a tall majestic mountain that is reflected in the lake around them. With the sea of serenity is rightfully mine, Justin sets the pole down and steps out onto the water, to Alexis’ astonishment. He reaches his hand out to her and sings step onto the water knowing what is true. She’s hesitant at first, but takes his hand and steps onto the water, amazed.

As the chorus begins, rain starts pouring down upon them and Justin pulls an umbrella from the boat. Alexis is disappointed but Justin sings And never blame the rainbows for the rain and points to a rainbow arching over the mountain. Her eyes glow with the beauty of it. And learn to forget the memories that cause you pain and we see Alexis fight with her boyfriend, then cut back to Justin soothing her. He sings the last whispered wish of age and she’s curious, so he leans to her ear and sings Is to live it all again. Alexis smiles. Justin points to the rainbow again and sings So never blame the rainbows for the rain.

Justin takes her hand and they walk through a fairy tale land of green fields and crystal blue skies and castles on the hillsides. He points out the sights to her. He stops and pulls her to him and sings the beat of my heart. Alexis looks deep into Justin’s eyes. As he sings the rhythm of love she puts her hand on Justin’s chest to feel his heart beat. He looks to the earth and sings the earth that’s beneath us, and Alexis looks down. Then he sings the heavens above and she looks at the blue sky and the birds flying across it. Justin moves away from Alexis as he sings I can hear forever calling out to me as if he really could head toward forever. Alexis reaches out and takes his hand. He turns and smiles.

With the changes we go through are making me strong Justin and Alexis are walking together through the fairy tale setting with their arms around each other. When it starts raining, they run to a shelter where the other Moodies are standing and Justin sings the shelter of friendship is where we belong. He points to the world outside in the rain, and sings look into the future knowing what we see. Alexis walks to the edge of the shelter and looks into the future, the sin in the distance, past the rain, shining and brightening the countryside creating a rainbow.

Justin walks up and stands next to her and sings and never blame the rainbows for the rain. She smiles up at him. He sings And learn to forget the memories that cause you pain and she tries to walk away, but Justin holds her back, brushing hair away from her face and cupping her cheek. He sings The last whispered wish of age and Alexis looks deeply into his eyes. He finishes the line Is to live it all again and she grins. Justin points to the rainbow singing So never blame the rainbows for the rain and puts his arm around her.

They walk next to a pool, which is swirling; the whirlpool of doubt can spin you around and Alexis almost falls in. Justin rescues her in time. Next to the ocean, they watch the water crashing upon the shore as he sings the wave of emotion takes you up pulls you down. Alexis walks away from Justin up the beach a few steps and turns around with leaving far behind us sweet young passion’s spray as she is his with a spray of water. Justin is on a boat that is heading out into the ocean. The other Moodies are with him on board. She calls to him and runs into the surf a little ways before giving up.

He sings So never blame the rainbows for the rain and a rainbow appears behind the boat, arching over it. She’s reaching for him, but he’s smiling sadly at her while he sings and learn to forget the memories that cause you pain. She takes a deep breath and nods her head smiling back at him. The last whispered wish of age is to live it all again he sings, and she silently agrees mouthing the words with him. The rainbow flares and the ship is gone. So never blame the rainbows. The picture phases out and then in to her room, where she’s sleeping in her chair. Never blame the rainbows, she awakes and looks around the room for Justin, but the room is empty. She looks forlorn for a moment, and then looks to a painting that wasn’t on her wall before. Never blame the rainbows for the rain. It’s a painting of a rainbow arched over a ship, with Justin standing on the stern, smiling. She smiles. Fade to black.

Strange Times

Before the music begins, a clock is ticking, the pendulum swinging.  The clock comes to a stop and starts moving backwards.  The clock becomes enshrouded in mist. As the music starts, the clock moves faster and faster, so the hands become a blur.  The scene that appears in tandem with the clock is of ages past – the Victorian age, the Renaissance, the Dark Ages, Roman times.  The clock becomes a sundial then a set of standing stones.

The words begin A long time ago, back in the mist of time, back where the crystal waters flow. The clock fades, as does the mist to the view of a garden with a beautiful waterfall cascading down a hillside.  There was a world so strange and so beautiful, all life would flourish and would grow. The garden is lush and tropical, filled with animals and a group of people enjoying themselves dressed as Egyptians.

Years went by, time just sped away, love was worshiped like the sun. Flashing back through history, we see couples of different time periods in romantic situations.  And as we arrive at the house of the water sign, show a group from the sixties – free love, hippy types. We’re living in strange times. The band stands together, side by side facing the world before them.  Strange times, strange times. They go into the house, as the sunsets, turning the sky a brilliant red.

What do we need? What do we hunger for? Who holds the secrets? Who will know? People seek guidance from kings, gurus, and the Gods.

We see a building like a big business, a bank, or buildings on Wall Street.  Temples of greed, ruins of the riverbed.  A band member leaves one of these buildings and imagines it in ruins.  Wastelands that melt before the snow. The image runs into the building like water which in turn seems to bleed into a desolate wasteland.

Faded image of the clock not moving, Time stands still as we race through the universe. The stars are speeding by, passing planets and we seem to get closer to a bright star. On our way to the sun. And as we arrive at the house of the water sign, the Moodies arrive from four different directions, one by horse, one by boat, one by car, and one by plane to a small beach on the shore. They get out of their different vehicles and walk up to each other – happy to see each other.  We’re living in strange times. They pick up instruments and play, then sing.  Strange times, strange times. There’s a small audience there to watch them.

It’s you and I together, we won’t be afraid, the band as a unit standing on the beach.  They are singing to the camera.  The beach fades away into nothing.  Even if the stars are falling down, down, down, down, down.  Sparks of light fall all around them.  Falling down. They don’t look worried.

The guitar solo is seen with Justin’s guitar as a view into the universe.  We see stars, planets, and galaxies as he’s playing.

Time stands still as we race through the universe. The band is sitting as the imaged behind them changes to civilizations that rise and fall. On our way to the sun, we see the sun in a clear blue sky and it grows bigger to fill the screen. And as we arrive at the house on the waterside, they are all walking slowly down the beach to a big pavilion filled with people.  We’re living in strange times. The band gets on stage and sings. Strange times, strange times.

The outro is images of the band in different time periods, like pirates, and knights, and Roman warriors, musicians of old and then as themselves. The picture fades away with a picture of the band, sitting on a beach, performing. They look at the camera and John winks.
